Hanceville resident, Lawrence Baker says, “I was sitting there trying to eat supper and I seen him [Chavez] walk down the driveway so I went and grabbed my gun, came out and asked him if he was the one they was looking for.” Chavez responded with, “Yes sir”. Mr. Baker proceeded to tell Chavez, “Well, you need to get down on the gravel then.” Mr. Baker then called the Hanceville Police Department. Hanceville PD was on site within minutes and Chavez willingly returned to custody. Mayor Kenneth Nail of Hanceville commended Baker on his bravery and wielding of his 45 Kimber. Chavez had been walking along the railroad tracks but came off due to dropping temperatures. A nearly audible sigh of relief can be heard across Cullman and Blount Counties as Leo Chavez, a convicted murderer returns behind bars.
