You may be surprised to find out that November 9 is a voting day in Blount County. The vote is to renew a major piece of funding for our local schools through an existing property tax that has to be renewed every 25 years. This tax was passed in 1937 and has been renewed every time since. To be clear this is not a new tax.
This ballot measure has not been heavily advertised which is strange for something so crucial to our school system. This small property tax brings in approximately $3.8 Million for schools in Blount County. While this property tax does not directly fund everything, without it, the schools would lose an additional $50 million in funding from the state. Per Alabama state law, all school boards must maintain a 10-mill property tax to receive state funding.
Voting will take place Tuesday, November 9 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at your normal polling location. Please take time to get out and vote. If this property tax is not maintained the doors of our local schools will close.
